In the past month or so, I’ve acquired (crazy cheap via ebay) and scoured well over 100 back issues* of International Gymnast, ranging from 1980-2002, although mostly from 1990-2001. Hence, tons of updates have been made throughout the site.

*Of course, as any good gymn fan, I already had a large collection of back issues myself – I just don’t know where they are at the moment…

In the meantime, a provisional copy of the 2013-2016 FIG Code for WAG has been “leaked.” You can download a copy for yourself here. Plenty of interesting changes, including some adjustments in difficulty value for Named skills:

Vault

  • Chusovitina II (Hsp, layout Rudi) – lowered from 6.3 to 6.2
  • Produnova – 7.1 to 7.0
  • Amanar – 6.5 to 6.3
  • Cheng – 6.5 to 6.4

Bars

  • Shushunova – devalued from G to E

Floor

  • Popa jump – raised from B to C
  • Podkopayeva (Double front w. 1/2 out) – raised from E to F
  • Silivas (Double-double) + Chusovitina (Full-twisting double layout) – both raised from G to H!

Group 1 – Mounts

Note that certain Mount elements (rolls, handstands and holds) may also/alternatively be performed within the routine. In fact, all such skills are now listed in the COP as Mounts by default (as opposed to under Group 4 – Holds and Acrobatic Non-Flight).

*Hand-Li Yifang
Jump/press/swing to hstd – 1/1 turn to hstd – lower to planche, clear pike support, or Release 1 hand w. swing down swd [Healy twirl to rear support] — D (1.411)
The original Hand-Li (see under Group 4 below) was a ‘Side hstd – Healy twirl to rear support.’ The reason for the “Hand-” prefix is unclear^, but the first “Li” to perform this skill in major competition was Li Yan at the 1989 Worlds. Li Li competed it at the 1990 World Cup and Li Yifang did it at the 1991 Worlds. (Only Li Li did it as a mount.) This first version was last listed in the 2001 COP…The current element first appeared in the 2006 COP. It was credited to Hand-Li in the 2007 edition, then Hand Li-Yifang in 2009. The biggest source of confusion, however, is that NO Li did the skill with a 1/1 (or any) turn in handstand…

^Note that the “Hand-” prefix may make the most sense if the skill was originally named for Li Li as she also debuted her back spin on beam (#3.308) at the same competition.

Last credited in 2006 COP

Laura Edwards, 2010 Commonwealth Games
Stand w. back to beam, jump bwd to inverted forearm support on beam — C (1.314)

Mostepanova, 1983 Worlds / *Onodi, 1989 Worlds
Arabian handspring — D (5.401)
From the September 2008 issue of International Gymnast, p.7: “According to Olga Mostepanova of the Soviet Union, this skill probably was not submitted to the FIG [in 1983] simply because it wasn’t one of her hardest elements. ‘I think this element went unnoticed because, for me, it was performed together with other elements which were much more complicated, and it is more beautiful…By the way, this element was done long before me, on floor exercise. I was [just] the first to do it on beam.’”

Thus the Arabian handspring on beam did not appear in the Code until it was submitted by Onodi in 1989, although Onodi herself has said that she and her teammates called the skill the “Mostie.”

Miller, 1993 Worlds
FF w. 1/4 twist to hstd – immediate 1/2 turn — D or E?
This skill remains a source of confusion and debate. For one thing, was the the 1/2 turn supposed to be a hop or a pirouette? (Miller always performed it as a very quick pirouette.) What IS clear is that it was never actually named for Miller, despite the repeated claims by TV commentators and others. From the June/July 1998 issue of International Gymnast, in response to a reader letter, the publication’s editor writes: “The skill you are referring to was never listed in the Code of Points as a “Miller,” according to Jackie Fie, Women’s Technical Committee President of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).”

Group 4 – Yurchenkos (RO, FF on) & RO, FF 1/1 on – Salto bwd off

*Yurchenko
Yurchenko tucked — 3.8  (4.10)
Retroactively named w. 2007 COP. Previously Yurchenko was credited w. the RO, FF approach but no specific vault. Note that she never actually competed this specific vault at a major international competition (or any competition to my knowlege), while she was the first to compete 3 others at World Cup and World Championships. Best guess is that the FIG simply chose the simplest vault in the Group as representative…

Mirela Peneva, 1993 Worlds or 1994 Dortmund Worlds?

Double-twisting layout Yurchenko [DTY] — 5.8  (4.34)
Retroactively named w. 2009 COP. It is particularly odd that this vault would be named after anyone. Baitova competed it “first” at Worlds only minutes before Shushunova, and Golea competed it several rotations later.

Zamolodchikova, 2000 Russian Cup / *Amanar, 2000 Olympics
2.5-twisting layout Yurchenko — 6.3  (4.35)
